Project ReCreation is a high-impact volunteer workday program that targets high-use, under served recreation centers for single-day improvement projects.
Why we do it:
San Francisco Parks Trust (SFPT) is supporting the Recreation and Parks Department (RPD) by bridging the budget gap and offering real solutions to the current City economic crisis. By making upgrades and improvements to recreation centers, SFPT works to create a sense of stewardship for these facilities that increases usage and enhances the lives of San Franciscans.
Who’s involved:
SFPT collaborates with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, union shops, community members, and a variety of organizations to bring the services, supplies and people power to recreation centers with the greatest need that are not due to be renovated soon.
What happens:
For four hours on a Saturday, volunteers meet at a recreation center to undertake various projects such as cleaning, organizing, planting, painting, and installing bookshelves. During the past 18 months, San Francisco Parks Trust completed nine Project ReCreation workdays, contributing over 2,200 hours of volunteer time and about $75,000 worth of materials. This translates into a real added value of over $128,000 in people power and resources.
To date, SFPT has completed ReCreations at Jackson Playground, Margaret Hayward Playground, Mission Playground, West Sunset Playground, Boeddeker Park, Sunset Recreation Center, Herz Clubhouse & Playground, Fulton Clubhouse & Playground, Hayes Valley Recreation Center, Silver Terrace Clubhouse & Playground, and Gilman Clubhouse & Playground. Visit one of these facilities to see the difference you can make as an SFPT volunteer.
