History
The Opening Night Party of the San Francisco Flower & Garden
Show is San Francisco Parks Trust largest annual fundraiser for the
city's parks. To date, the party has raised more than $2 million for
the restoration and enhancement of the city's 4,000 acres of parks,
recreation centers, and open spaces. San Francisco Parks Trust has
been the host of the Opening Night Party since the Show's inception in
1985. Since horticulture is a major interest of many of the Trust's
members and donors, the Opening Night Party presented a perfect
opportunity to unite garden aficionados with philanthropists and park
conservationists. The fundraiser is a special draw for horticulture
enthusiasts eager for a sneak peek of the gardens and judge's
results.
In 1998, the Show changed its location from Fort Mason to the Cow
Palace. In order to transform the Cow Palace into this world-class
garden display, the show uses approximately 1,200 cubic yards of
sawdust and mulch (about 150 dump truck-loads) and 280,000 pounds of
rock. Trucks from Northern California all the way down to San Diego
transport exotic plants for the gardens, and more than 300 theater
lights are hung from the ceiling to cast the gardens in dramatic
light.
