GearUp Needs
Sports equipment, chairs, tables, and desks, and programming supplies

Located on Mason Street between Washington Street and Truett Street, Betty Ann Ong Chinese Recreation Center is one of San Francisco’s oldest and most popular recreation centers, serving one of the city’s most densely populated neighborhoods. It has been a welcoming venue for the games, sports, social, and educational activities of generations of area residents of all ages and backgrounds.

Nearly $21 million has been allocated for its renovation, from the 2000 Neighborhood Park Projects Bond and 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks Bond. The new three-level facility (23,850 square feet) consists of a basement and two floors. The Basement contains lobby access from the street corner, building mechanical and electrical functions, offices, and storage. The first level will house the gym, two multipurpose rooms, restrooms, storage, and a staff office. The second level contains a large multipurpose room, restrooms, storage, and a second staff office. The second level opens onto a terrace and playground. New landscaping, playground, accessible path of travel, and sidewalk repairs are also part of the project. The center is scheduled to reopen in July 2012.

The Bond funding does not permit the purchase furniture and equipment, and city-wide budget cuts impede the Recreation & Park Department’s ability to properly outfit the center. The Center will need desks, tables, chairs, and sports equipment in order to deliver its programs. The initial cost estimate for these items is $100,000.
