Who We Are
Friends of Alta Plaza Park is a non-profit organization formed to enable neighborhood families to become involved in the renovation of Alta Plaza Park. We work with many people in the community and the City of San Francisco’s Recreation and Park Department, developing ideas and plans to improve our park.
About Alta Plaza Park
Originally a rock quarry, Alta Plaza Park sits on 11.9 acres bounded by Steiner, Scott, Clay and Jackson streets. After the earthquake and fire of 1906, Alta Plaza was one of the areas people fled to from downtown and nearby neighborhoods to set up campsites until they were able to relocate. The site was finally turned into a park in 1910 and is one of San Francisco’s most beautiful terraced parks.
Our Goal
We are committed to renovating Alta Plaza Park to benefit its many users and our neighborhood. This means replacing old, outdated and unsafe equipment, addition of a new state of the art playground, renovating the tennis courts, converting one court to a tennis / basketball multi-use court, and renovating and reforesting the horticulture / landscape.
