The Douglass Street Steps Coalition is a partnership of residents who have united to improve the public open space alongside the stairway that connects Corwin and Douglass Streets. Their mission is to ensure that the garden is sustainable well into the future for the community and for the visitors who frequently use the staircase because of the amazing view of the city from the top. These types of street parks are facilitating partnerships between neighbors who wish to link their public gardens and create “greenways” to connect neighborhoods and provide beautification and recreation areas to the larger community. These landscapes also have environmental benefits as they provide habitat for wildlife and slow storm water runoff by allowing water to penetrate the ground instead of flooding the sewer system.
