YESTERDAY'S HARVEST November 2008

On Saturday, October 18th, Street Parks volunteers weeded and beautified North Beach's Michelangelo Playground Community Garden. The sun was shining and the North Beach parrots were close by to keep us company! We were joined by volunteers from Newcomer High, Urban High, San Francisco State and more! Together we cleared pathways in the garden and spread woodchips to provide a barrier for weeds. The Michelangelo gardeners showed their appreciation with delicious baked goods and fresh fruit to supplement our lunch! We all had a great time, and the garden looks amazing.

Q: I am curious about San Francisco's park lands. How do I find out more?
A: Hop on a bike and join the Recreation and Park Department's park bike tours.

Jared Blumenfeld, the acting director of San Francisco's Rec and Park Department, is currently leading a series of bike tours to the city's 220 parks over the next two months. Jared, who is also the director of San Francisco's Department of the Environment, has designed these tours to highlight the bike accessibility of our city's parks and green spaces. Take this opportunity to explore San Francisco's many wonderful parks and to get some fresh air. The tours will cover a total of 364 miles along the way and hopefully help to connect countless people to their park system. All are welcome to join. Click here to view the full schedule and to see a blog discussing past tours.

Emily Adler
Green Alternatives Fellow at Global Exchange

Emily has been working on a variety of interesting and cool projects this year in her position as the Green Alternatives Fellow at Global Exchange. Still, there have certainly been some key words tying together all of her work: youth, green and unified. A key goal for Emily is to connect green-minded youth and youth program providers so that they become a powerful coalition; sharing resources, developing best practices, and growing together. This movement is starting here in the Bay Area, but it will hopefully spread far and wide.

With those key words in mind, Emily and the folks at Global Exchange are proud to present the Youth Unity Tent, the Green Festival's first ever youth only space. The Green Festival is an annual event where people from all over come to get inspirational and practical environmental knowledge to carry with them in their daily life and work. The Youth Unity Tent will do just that, but in a way that is relevant to the concerns and interests of young people. Plus, all youth, 18 and under, get free admission to the Green Festival!

Green action covers a wide range of interests, ages, and backgrounds and Emily hopes that the Youth Unity Tent will help to reflect that diversity. Emily has been working to develop a wide variety workshops and panels to fit the varied interests of the Bay Area's young people. There are fun, hands-on activities like helping to build the plastic water bottle tsunami to draw attention to the problem of plastic pollution, as well as discussions and panels like the Youth Climate Activism workshop, presented by Rainforest Action Network (RAN). There will also be music and entertainment! Click here to see a full schedule of events. The Green Festival is November 14th - 16th and the Youth Unity Tent will be open November 15th and 16th.

Youth Unity will not end with the Green Festival. Emily is working on upcoming events and meetings that will keep this movement going! This spring Global Exchange will host the 1st annual Bay Area Youth Convergence, a conference for like-minded young people to come together from all over the Bay. There is also Youth United for Community Action Now! (YU- CAN) which is an emerging coalition of youth and youth program providers. These are just a few opportunities for you to get involved with.
