Street Parks'
Dirt
|
 |
 |
What is a Street Park? A Street Park is a community-managed open space; a school garden, a neighborhood beautification project, a plot-style community garden...almost anything you can imagine.
A Street Park characterizes the diversity of the community that cares for it.

TALL POPPY
Outstanding Gardener JUDE KOSKI, Hayes Valley - Director, SFGRO
San Francisco Garden Resource Organization (SFGRO) seeks to meet the needs of community gardeners and to enhance the experience of gardening as a source of beauty, pleasure, food and community for all San Franciscans.
The organization, in part, grew out of Jude's efforts in 2002, when as Coordinator for the Page Street Garden he spearheaded a successful 18-month campaign to save Page Street Garden from development. In 2003, a group of garden educators created a new community garden project in response, Jude was invited to join and assumed a leadership role.
Jude Koski grew up gardening and ever since has had a passion for digging in the dirt.
Through the spring SFGRO is running an assessment of community garden needs and priorities. To learn more about the assessment and the Page Street Garden, visit SFGRO online.

I SPY...

What's up with Street Parks Youth WHITE CRANE SPRINGS - Street Parks Youth get it done.
On a chilly morning in early November, a group of 17 youth volunteers from Sacred Heart Preparatory huddled together in White Crane Springs Community Garden (WCS) - eager to start the day. This was the inaugural crew for SFPT's new program: Street Parks Youth (or SPY for short).
This fall, San Francisco Parks Trust (SFPT) launched SPY, a new youth program designed to help foster a sense of stewardship in San Francisco and to support the work of gardeners like you with volunteers and new gardeners.
In October we coordinated with WCS gardeners to determine the workscope and to plan out the activities for the day. A naturalist was contacted to provide a lesson for the day and DPW invited the students to attend.
The day was a success by all measures and several students even said they'd like to join the garden. We weeded an area to construct new plots, worked on the compost pile, used a drill to make new raised beds, mulched paths, and completed a field survey.
When the work was done we were treated to an awesome lunch cooked by the very gracious WCS gardeners. We had BBQ burgers, homemade pie, salad, and much more. SFPT provided money for the food; WCS put in all the heart.
This new program is off to a great start and we're grateful to the fantastic Sacred Heart volunteers, the gardens at White Crane Springs and our partners at DPW.
Contact Tom Rice at White Crane Springs to get a plot. View pictures from November at White Crane Springs.

How did Street Parks get started?
In 2004, the San Francisco Department of Public Works (DPW) approached San Francisco Parks Trust (SFPT) to partner in formalizing, funding, and administering Street Parks: a program to support urban greening, commmunity-management of public spaces, and to support existing community- managed open spaces.
