Bryan Ting

President of            Eco-Students

Bryan Ting

Bryan is senior at SF State majoring in environmental studies and he is already putting his idealism to work.  His interests in environmental studies started with one class in high school and is now a huge part of his life. His interest in environmentalism even led him to spend an entire semester taking environmental classes on a boat in the Semester at Sea program. While sailing around the world, Bryan  managed to organize an environmental awareness program on the boat!

As the president of the on-campus club, Eco-Students, Bryan is helping to lead SF State down a more eco-friendly, sustainable path.  They are working to start a campus composting program and have succeeded in a battery collection program.  Not only do they host an Earth Day celebration but they also host a "6-months from earth day" celebration in October, complete with informative workshops, a bike raffle and of course, free food.  This year Bryan and the rest of the club plan to participate in Focus the Nation, a national teach-in that is designed to keep people informed about climate change, and how to decrease it.

In addition to his great work during the school year, Bryan was also a part of SF Park Trust's Youth Environmental Science (YES!) summer program.  The Bayview-based camp was composed of about 30 students and featured hands-on learning about environmental science. Bryan says that it was an invaluable experience and that he loved interacting with the students, as well as helping them experience parts of nature that they had never seen before.

I SPY...
What's Up Next
A Look at CommiYfor What is Coming This Year for Street Parks Youth.
HUMAN KNOT

It's the start of a new year so I thought I'd give a sneak peak into the awesome year in store for Street Parks Youth.

SPY monthly gardening days will resume in February, and we will start the year off with not one but two SPY gardening days.  Street Parks Youth (we call it SPY for short) meets once a month at local community gardens for a fun day of gardening, community service and FREE LUNCH! As always, you can drop into any gardening day provided that you RSVP first.

Earth Day will be here before you know it, and SPY will be celebrating by partnering with the Student Conservation Association (SCA) to establish a plant nursery at Alemany Farm on Saturday, April 19th and yes, there will be a BBQ.   The nursery will provide community gardens with seedlings if they need them, free of charge. It works both ways; gardens clearing plants can also donate them to the nursery so other gardens can use them - a lot better than tossing plants into the compost pile.  If you are interested in volunteering on April 19th or any other day, contact Julia by email or call 415-750-5110.

There are great "members-only" events throughout the year.   On April 5th  SPY members will spend the day sailing with the Treasure Island Sailing Company.  We will spend the weekend camping at Mt. Tamalpais July 19th and 20th,  and we will even go canoeing with Save the Bay in September.  Our second annual Breaking Ground Conference will take place in November.  Remember, all you have to do is commit to four gardening days to get to attend SPY "members only" events throughout the year.

There are plenty of ways to get involved with Street Parks Youth so mark your calendars and contact us if you have any questions.  I'm looking forward to a great year!

to RSVP for the event.

Help Support Your Parks!
SFPT seeks volunteer support for Parks Bond

YES on A

As much as we all love our parks here in the city we have to admit that many are greatly in need of repair.  Earlier this year, an independent analysis found that our parks need $1.7 billion in repairs and unless we act now, that number is only going to go up. On February 5th, San Francisco voters will consider a $185 million bond to repair parks and playgrounds - Prop A.  The passing of the Parks Bond would enact a 10-year plan to improve open space around the city.  This plan includes improvements ranging from seismic upgrades for recreation centers to planting new trees in parks.

The Parks Trust is a lead supporter of Prop A.  Throughout the month we will be helping to organize rallies, hosting phone banking, and gathering volunteers for door-to-door campaigning.  This is where you come in!  Supporting the Parks Bond is about more that just voting yes on Prop A.  Even if you can't vote yet, you can help spread the word.  Working on this campaign is a great way to gain some experience in political organizing and a chance to make a big contribution to parks and green space in general -- not to mention that it's a pretty good way to work off some community service hours for school. There are plenty of ways to help out.

To find out more about how you can get involved please contact Nicole by email or call 415-750-5224.
